You are multiplied by each sound that you hear. Somewhere along the line, he thought, these things have become your heritage. Through the heat haze and the thin mid-morning film of the parched red dust came up a muted orchestra of sounds: the clankings of steel-wheeled carts bouncing over brick, the slappings of oiled leather slingstraps, the shuffling beat of scorched shoesoles, the hoarse expletives of irritated noncoms. He was feeling a half-sheepish affection for his vantage point that he was leaving.īelow him under the blows of the February Hawaiian sun the quadrangle gasped defenselessly, like an exhausted fighter. He leaned his elbows on the porch ledge and stood looking down through the screens at the familiar scene of the barracks square laid out below with the tiers of porches dark in the faces of the three-story concrete barracks fronting on the square. When he finished packing, he walked out on to the third-floor porch of the barracks brushing the dust from his hands, a very neat and deceptively slim young man in the summer khakis that were still early morning fresh. ![]()

![]() Loyal readers of the previous eight novels will look forward to seeing what has been going on since they last caught up with Mouse, Mary Ann and Mrs Madrigal. People connect to the world and the characters that Maupin has created. This is true for many readers – of all the books that I have been reading and reviewing, this one drew the most response and interest when I talked about it on Twitter. These characters have been with me for many years, since I first read the earlier books in the series. I found myself emotionally entangled: twice I had to put the book down and think through what I had read before I could return to the story. I savoured the reading and the comfort of catching up with old friends I have not sat down with for a while. There’s also a lot of loving descriptions of food, and quite a few animals (Maggie lives on a farm). ![]() There’s a lot of mentions of specific books in here, as part of Tom’s journey is to learn to love reading (and he reads all over the place, starting with a ton of romance novels). Maggie doesn’t have a family at all, it seems she once had a son. Tom’s mother is dead, and his dad is emotionally unavailable, in addition to money troubles. They sort of adopt each other as pseudo-family. Through a series of charmingly contrived circumstances, sixteen-year old Tom and seventy-two year old Maggie become friends through the library, and the book follows both of them in how the relationship slowly changes them. ![]() Especially since I have forgotten all the characters’ names and just had to look them all up. Out of all the episodes so far in Diagnosis, “A Question of Trust” was the most frustrating. Lashay claims that her experiences began when a raccoon bit her, but tests have dismissed that her condition is down to parasitical involvement. Due to negative experiences with previous doctors who accuse her condition of being psychological, the family has been ultra-cynical about other diagnoses. She cannot hold anything down that she eats or drinks.
